It's rare for the Denver Broncos to open the season with a rookie starting at quarterback. It has been over 40 years since it happened. But at this point, it would be an upset if Bo Nix does not take the field in Week 1 for the team.

All of the reviews of how Nix has looked so far and what the team thinks of its first-round pick continue to be positive. That is going to be big if those hopes turn into results as Broncos head coach Sean Payton has never developed a first-round pick.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN recently discussed how the quarterback situation in Denver looks and stated that Nix is everything that Payton thought he would be. Remember, Payton strongly defended the team's decision to take Nix at No. 12 overall back in April, a move many called a "reach".

All signs could be pointing to Bo Nix winning starting job

There is talk from some around the NFL media that Nix is going to win this job and it would be a surprise if not. However, there will still be factors for the team to consider before making that decision.

How competitive is this team going to be? Is it a team that is likely to take some beatings and lose a lot of games? If that is the case, and it can be seen a mile away, will it do more harm than help to throw Nix out on the field right away?

That could be the only legitimate argument to ease Nix into the mix if he looks ready to get out there but Payton is also likely eager to see his prized product in action.

Unless Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson just has an incredible training camp and preseason performance, Nix will almost certainly be the guy, barring something unforeseen.
