Trey Lance flunks Dallas Cowboys preseason debut

It's not exactly stereotypical for a teams third string quarterback to be a headline making story, but in the case of former second overall pick Trey Lance, that is the case. With the Dallas Cowboys somewhat aggressively making a trade for Lance last season given how quick San Francisco was willing to move off of him, there was so hope within the building and in the fan base that Lance could live up to his massive potential and be developed behind Dak Prescott who enters the final year of his contract.

Needless to say, Lance didn't live up to any of the expectations set out for him in the teams preseason opener.  Lance was erratic as a passer, missing simple throws, could not find a rhythm within the offense, and quite simply held an offense that was set up time and time again with great field position back. This is not a good look for Lance or the front office that traded for him, and if these types of performances continue, you can expect the former first round pick to be on the outs in Dallas despite their initial investment in him.

There are two more preseason games to go and Lance will have a shot at redemption, but there must be some massive improvements on the more basic fundamentals of the position. Lance will need to reel in his foot work, and correct his inaccuracy if he wants to be able to stay on the Dallas roster come opening day of the season.
