Dak Prescott's future with the Dallas Cowboys remains in limbo as the two sides have not been able to come to an agreement on a long-term deal ahead of what is a contract year for the veteran quarterback.

And the Cowboys don't have any control over the signal-caller, either, as his current deal has a no-trade clause and prevents Dallas from being able to use the franchise tag on him in 2025.

Knowing that, ESPN's Dan Graziano thinks it isn't an overreaction to believe that Prescott could land elsewhere in free agency next offseason. However, he still thinks the most likely outcome is that Prescott stays with the Cowboys.

The team is in a tough spot, as Prescott's contract situation gives him all the leverage here. And he doesn't have to do a deal with the Cowboys unless it's exactly the deal he wants. That's why the possibility of Prescott hitting the market as an unrestricted free agent quarterback -- and cashing in with a deal likely to exceed $60 million per year -- is not far-fetched.

Verdict: NOT AN OVERREACTION

To be clear, this is NOT what I am predicting. I still think the most likely outcome here is that Prescott and the Cowboys find a way to get a deal done before he becomes a free agent. Heck, they could even get one done before the start of this season for all we know. But if they don't finalize something before or during the season, I think it would be a massive mistake to rule out this possibility.

While Prescott does have his shortcomings, he would amount to an upgrade at the quarterback position for a lot of teams, thus, he'd draw plenty of interest on the open market, which could make him even more expensive.

If the Cowboys are truly intent on keeping Prescott, who has a ton of leverage at this point, Jerry Jones is going to have to open his wallet before that time comes, and that scenario remains the most likely.

If not, or if Dallas is simply unable to get something done, we wouldn't rule out a trade at the deadline, although that is highly unlikely considering the Cowboys won't be out of contention that early in the season.
