Over the weekend, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams suffered a torn ACL in his knee that will be ending his season before it began. The team has some depth at the edge position, but they need more. In today’s NFL, teams with depth at the position, more often than not, tend to have more success on defense.
Rookie Marshawn Kneeland out of Western Michigan is poised to step up in Williams' absence. Kneeland was in the discussion to go in the first round of April’s draft but fell to the Cowboys in round two. Who else could help in Williams’ absence from the rotation? Some sustainable free agents may be available.
Charles Harris
Harris started his career in Miami after being drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. After some up-and-down seasons in Miami, he made his way to Detroit with the Lions, where he saw himself make some headway his first year. Sadly, his last two seasons with the team were injury-ridden, and the team parted ways with him. He could provide some juice on the outside as a valuable rotational piece at EDGE.
Yannick Ngakoue
Ngakoue has played for three teams in three seasons and to be honest it is rather puzzling. In those three seasons he has produced as and EDGE rusher by getting to the quarterback for a sack 23.5 times. Of all the names on the list, Ngakoue makes the most sense and would make the most impact.
Markus Golden
Another chess piece the Cowboys could be playing in the coming days would be veteran Markus Golden. Golden has made several stops in his career most lately in Pittsburgh but he had a lengthy stay in Arizona prior to that. He has proven he can provide run support as well as pass rush pressure, could be a fun piece in Mike Zimmer’s defense.
