Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has announced his decision about whether Trey Lance or Cooper Rush will be the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott.
On Monday, the coach revealed that Rush will be the second quarterback off the bench, per Garrett Podell of CBS Sports.
McCarthy also expressed that he has been "encouraged and excited" with the development of Lance, who played a ton this preseason.
Anyone who watched Lance a lot in those games understands why this decision was made. Blessed with physical gifts that show up often, Lance (drafted third overall in 2021) still struggles with the most important aspects of playing quarterback at the NFL level.
Rush, on the other hand, has been getting rave reviews from McCarthy throughout the summer. A former undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2017, Rush has also acquitted himself well in previous games where he's needed to start.
Overall, Rush has appeared in 26 games, starting six. He's gone 5-1 in those starts and has accumulated 1,619 passing yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions throughout his career.
