The Dallas Cowboys have some needs to address ahead of the 2024 NFL trade deadline, and one analyst believes running back is among them.
It's certainly not a terrible idea for the Cowboys to consider adding to their running backs room, with Dallas sporting the second-worst rushing attack in the NFL using a combination of Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliot, neither of whom have been effective.
Dowdle is averaging a barely acceptable 4.1 yards per carry, while Elliott has been a total non-factor to the tune of 3.3 yards per tote. And those numbers are despite the fact that Dallas' offensive line ranks 13th in run-block win rate, per ESPN.
With that in mind, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin is suggesting a trade that lands the Cowboys Carolina Panthers running back Miles Sanders. Here's what he said:
"Jerry Jones didn't want to pay for Derrick Henry, so he might require Carolina to eat some of Sanders' deal," Benjamin wrote. "But the former Eagles standout would at least give Dak Prescott more proven run support."
While the Cowboys could use an upgrade at running back, Sanders would not give them one. After all, he's not any better than either of the backs Dallas has now, and he's not even worth the late-round pick it would take to acquire him.
After signing a four-year, $25.4 million deal with the Panthers in 2023, Sanders has been a total disaster. He averaged a putrid 3.3 yards per carry last season before losing the starting job to Chuba Hubbard, and he has yet to regain the job with Hubbard thriving in 2024. Sanders has just 3.6 yards per carry this season.
Whatever Sanders once had is now long gone and it would make zero sense for the Cowboys to bring him in. If Dallas does end up landing a running back at the trade deadline, it won't be Sanders.
