As the focus for the Dallas Cowboys surrounds the need to add help at wide receiver, one NFL analyst believes the team should take a look at the safety position ahead of the trade deadline next month.
The suggestion comes from Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox, who believes the team could eventually be a trade suitor for Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker.
"Baker could also be a sensible trade target for the Cowboys," Knox wrote. "Dallas is still in the playoff mix and has gotten underwhelming play from safeties Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker, a fact recently noted by Matt Holder of the Bleacher Report Scouting Department."
A six-time Pro Bowler, Baker would immediately provide an upgrade to Dallas' secondary. The 28-year-old is serviceable in coverage but he really shines in the box, where he's an elite run defender. The Cowboys sport a bottom-10 run defense.
But the Cardinals' willingness to trade Baker remains unknown. He is in the final year of his contract, which is something the Cowboys would have to consider if they want to pull off a trade for Baker, but the Cardinals are still in the thick of things in their division and the early NFC playoff picture.
That said, the Cardinals have four more games until the Nov. 5 trade deadline and if things go south, Baker would likely become a prime trade candidate. Arizona's next four games are all winnable, though, with matchups against the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears.
Earlier this offseason, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the team was all in for the 2024 campaign, but everything the team has done to this point suggests otherwise.
Adding a player like Baker should he become available would show Jerry wasn't full of it. The same goes for adding an impact wide receiver, which the team desperately needs.
