The Cleveland Browns are 1-5 and have yet to score 20 points in a game this season. The Browns are also 31st in EPA per play and 32nd in dropback success rate.
Despite this, head coach Kevin Stefanski refuses to bench quarterback Deshaun Watson. He confirmed as much in his post-game press conference. When asked if the Browns would continue to play Deshaun Watson, Stefanski gave a simple "Yes" as his answer. In his Monday press-conference, Stefanski doubled down.
"I think Deshaun gives us the best chance to win [and] continues to give us the best chance to win," Stefanski said.
Sure, man. All-time horrible quarterback play is the secret ingredient for success. Everyone knows this.
Watson currently ranks 32nd out of 32 qualified quarterbacks in EPA per play, adjusted EPA per play, and success rate. He is 30th in CPOE and 31st in QBR with a rancid 21.5.
Stefanski was also asked if owner Jimmy Haslam was forcing him to start Watson, which he denied.
"Any decision when it comes to football is my decision."
If that's the case, Stefanski is in danger of losing the locker room. There are 52 other guys that are trying their hardest to win games, and they know that the 53rd guy is what's preventing them from doing so. What does this say to Myles Garrett? Or Denzel Ward? Or the offensive line? All the guys on this team have goals of winning that cannot be achieved because of the guy under center, and seemingly because of the head coach who refuses to bench him.
