Bengals lose heartbreaker to Ravens in OT: Everything we know from Week 5 image

The Cincinnati Bengals (1-4) put together a worthy fight but ultimately lost in overtime, 41-38, to the Baltimore Ravens (3-2) at Paycor Stadium.

Even though the Bengals held a 10-point lead twice throughout the fourth quarter, the Ravens were able to storm back for an incredible come-from-behind win.

Despite a career day from Joe Burrow — outside of a late fourth-quarter interception — the Bengals defense allowed a season-high 520 total yards to the Ravens offense.

Here's everything we know from the

Bengals vs. Ravens Week 5 game recap

Keys to the game

  • The Bengals offense was 8-of-14 (57%) on third down and 3-of-3 in the red zone.
  • Meanwhile, the Ravens were 10-of-15 (67%) on third down and 5-of-6 (83%) in the red zone.
  • Cincinnati ran for only 71 yards at 3.1 yards per carry.
  • Evan McPherson missed a potential game-winning field-goal attempt from 53 yards in overtime.

Stars of the Game

  • QB Joe Burrow: Even after a late interception in the fourth quarter, Burrow had a career day. He tossed five touchdowns in a game for the first time in his career. He also completed 30-of-39 passes for 392 yards and a 137.0 passer rating.
  • WR Ja’Marr Chase: A classic game from Chase, the superstar wideout posted 10 receptions for 193 yards and two touchdowns.
  • DE Sam Hubbard: The veteran edge rusher posted a team-high nine tackles (seven solo) while adding a sack, two quarterback hits and two tackles for loss.

Biggest takeaway

The biggest takeaway here easily is the continued struggles of the Bengals defense. Cincinnati's defense failed to generate consistent stops on third down, and they struggled to push back in the red zone. When Joe Burrow throws for 392 yards and five touchdowns, the game should have been well in hand. Sure, they would have won if McPherson hit the 53-yard attempt in overtime, but the game shouldn't have even gone to overtime, regardless of how difficult a matchup it was against the Ravens offense.

Quick Hits

  • According to Next Gen Stats, Lamar Jackson completed 10-of-15 intermediate passes (between 10-19 air yards) for 174 yards and a touchdown.
  • DE Trey Hendrickson generated seven pressures on 20 pass-rush snaps (35%) against Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley (Next Gen Stats).
  • The Bengals had an 89% win probability after Burrow and Higgins connected on a nine-yard play with 3:15 left in the fourth quarter. It was their highest win probability of the game.
  • Nine receptions for Tee Higgins were his most in a game since Nov. 20, 2022.
  • Chase Brown led the backfield with 12 carries for 46 rushing yards while Zack Moss had nine carries for 24 rushing yards.

What’s next?

The Bengals are on the road in Week 6 to visit the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football.
