The internet is undefeated. The Bears are not. Chicago suffered its eighth loss of the season in Week 13 in the most excruciating way possible. It's the Bears' sixth loss in a row, but it stings slightly more than the others.
Chicago was down 16-0 at halftime, and it seemed like it was heading toward a blowout. However, the Bears scored a touchdown to open the second half. After a Lions TD, Chicago's defense pitched a shutout the rest of the game, and the offense scored two more touchdowns. The Bears got the ball with 3:31 left in the game for a chance to either score a potential game-winning touchdown or at least kick a game-tying field goal.
Neither happened. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked with 36 seconds left with the Bears on Detroit's 35-yard line — still within field-goal range. Now possibly out of range at the 41, he seemingly had no urgency to get the play off, and the ball wasn't snapped until six seconds remained in the game. His final heave fell incomplete, and the game was over.

To make matters worse, Chicago had one timeout left, and head coach Matt Eberflus was trying his best to hold it to either set up a field goal or extend the drive for a shot at the end zone. He could have burned it once everything broke down, as there was still plenty of time to run a play, clock the ball, and kick a field goal, but Eberflus let things play out much to the detriment of his own team.
Regardless of whether more blame falls on Eberflus or Williams, the head coach will inevitably take a large share of the criticism for end-of-game clock-management issues — and take criticism Eberflus did.
