The Chicago Bears can’t seem to get any favors when trying to ease their offensive woes.
Chicago has had difficulty finding any sense of rhythm on offense, as they’ve produced just one touchdown through two games. The Bears travel to face the winless Indianapolis Colts this Sunday but began preparing for Indy without a pair of key players.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen and starting offensive lineman Teven Jenkins were among the missing at Bears practice Wednesday.
Last week, Allen missed every practice and was scratched from the lineup 90 minutes before kickoff against the Texans. He suffered an injury to his heel last month. “ He should be fine,” general manager Ryan Poles told reporters on August 28.
Now, that optimism is far more measured. “It’s just working it day to day and see what it is day to day,” head coach Matt Eberflus said. “Again, we're obviously wanting him to come back as fast as possible, but it’s got to be right for him.”
Allen did play in Week 1 against the Tennesse Titans, getting four receptions for 29 yards on 11 targets.
Jenkins missed practice with a severe thigh contusion, another setback for an offensive line that has struggled to create space in the run game and provide protection for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
“We do feel good about it, so, again, we’ll see where it goes for tomorrow again, but it’s a power thing and him feeling comfortable and the trainers feeling comfortable for him coming back in,” Eberflus said.
Also missing practice were fullback Khari Blasingame (knee) and rookie defensive tackle Zacch Pickens (groin).
The Bears added defensive lineman Deshaun Mallory to the practice squad for depth. Mallory, an undrafted free agent, made it through the training camp before being cut.
