It's a familiar story: The Chicago Bears are struggling to generate offense.
Through three games in 2024, the Bears have scored just 39 points, excluding defensive and special teams touchdowns. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has been under constant pressure, and his skill players have been inconsistent as well.
Luckily, first-round pick Rome Odunze appeared to break out with a 115-yard performance on Sunday. But D.J. Moore has just 167 yards through three games, and six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen has missed the last two games with a heel injury.
To ensure Williams has the best chance for success, the Bears will need to keep the cupboard stocked with weapons heading into future seasons. That could result in a surprise addition of another Pro Bowl receiver in 2025.
On Monday, Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department predicted that the Bears will sign former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion Chris Godwin, who is having an excellent season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Keenan Allen is only on a one-year deal and has been banged up to begin the season. The 32-year-old has also been dealing with injuries over the last few years, so there's a chance Chicago opts not to re-sign him in the offseason, which would leave the offense with a need at wide receiver.
"Godwin will be one of the best wide receivers on the open market as he's logged four 1,000-yard seasons in the last five years and is off to a good start in 2024 with 253 yards in three games."
With 253 yards and an NFL-best three touchdowns through the Bucs' first three games, the 28-year-old Godwin looks to be fully in his prime. He's totaled 6,943 yards in his eight seasons thus far, making him the second-leading receiver in Tampa Bay history.
Godwin won't come cheap, but as a veteran, he may not require a long-term deal (perhaps two years, perhaps three). The Bears are fortunate to have $73 million of projected cap space in 2025, per Over The Cap, and would easily be able to fit another receiver into the picture.
If Odunze and Moore perform to their capabilities, Godwin would make the Bears' wide receiver room one of the most formidable in the NFL. But the offense will also need to show improvements in order to convince the decorated vet he should come to Chicago.
