The Chicago Bears have been attempting to determine who would be the backup quarterback behind Caleb Williams throughout the summer.
Chicago selected Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 National Football League Draft and he is expected to be the team's starting quarterback for years to come. The Bears have been trying to find a serviceable backup, though, just in case injuries pop up.
Second-year quarterback Tyson Bagent and veteran Brett Rypien competed for the backup job throughout the summer and now we know who will be the No. 2 quarterback on the roster. Chicago reportedly cut Rypien on Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
"The Bears released QB Brett Rypien, per source," Pelissero said. "The Hall of Fame game standout is vested and free to sign elsewhere immediately."
Rypien is a four-year National Football League veteran entering his fifth professional season. He was a backup for the Denver Broncos for the first three seasons of his career before joining the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. He has started four games throughout his young career and is 2-2 with four touchdown passes and nine interceptions.
Bagent was a rookie in 2023 with the Bears after going undrafted. He started four games for Chicago in 2023 and was 2-2 with three touchdown passes and six interceptions.
Both quarterbacks were solid throughout the summer, but the 24-year-old showed some more flare and now will be the backup behind Williams unless the Bears make another move before Week 1 action kicks off.
