The Chicago Bears entered the 2024 NFL season with high hopes and aspirations. That is primarily due to their rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams. Thus far, things have not gone as planned.
The Bears are 1-2, and the offense under Williams has been putrid. They rank 30th in yards per game and are in the bottom third in every major statistical category.
That has opened the door for many to question whether Williams was the savior after all, including former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones.
“Why do these other quarterbacks, when you watch them play, look like they know what they’re doing?” Jones said on Fox Sports 1's "The Facility."
“Right now, Caleb Williams is doing stupid stuff. You’re on the right hash, waiting five seconds to throw an out route outside the numbers on the left side. That’s crazy."
“You have three turnovers, you had two last week, you’re turning the ball over. To me, he doesn’t look like he knows where he’s supposed to go with the football, and if he does, he’s super late. That’s not the Caleb Williams we saw in college.”
Jones' assessment appears to be accurate.
Williams is completing just 59 percent of his passes, has thrown two touchdowns and four interceptions, and has been sacked 13 times through his first three games.
To be fair, though, this is what rookie quarterbacks typically look like early. Following C.J. Stroud's immaculate rookie season last year, pundits and fans tend to forget that point. Ironically, it was Stroud who gave Williams some words of advice after their Week 2 matchup.
Additionally, he has shown improvement and is coming off his best game in the loss to the Indianapolis Colts. So, while Williams may not be lighting the league on fire, the jury is still out.
