No less than 28.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is once again the talk of the NFL for moronic comments about his ability. One anonymous NFL executive told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Allen is “overrated” and makes too many mistakes. This is despite the fact that Allen has been the most productive player in the history of the sport over a four-year span, and is by and large the only reason the Bills are constantly in the playoffs and making deep runs into January.
Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd said that if the NFL redrafted the entire league, Allen would go No. 2 only behind Patrick Mahomes. And he is correct. Almost the entire league would trade their current quarterback for Josh Allen without hesitation - so who are the teams that wouldn’t?
The Chiefs would obviously stay put. Mahomes is the best quarterback in the game’s history (shut up, yes he is) and could very well become the first quarterback to ever win three straight Super Bowls.
The Bengals are interesting. Of course, I would take Allen over Joe Burrow, but let’s not pretend Burrow isn’t fantastic. He’s a top three quarterback in the game no matter how you slice it, and he’s the only active quarterback to have beaten Mahomes in the playoffs. Despite my own opinions, I wouldn’t argue with anyone who would say they’d take Burrow.
The only other two teams that I could even fathom saying they would keep their respective guys would be the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans. Why? Because both Jordan Love and C.J. Stroud are top 10 quarterbacks in the game, and they are both on rookie contracts. Allen is obviously better than each of them, but if you’d make the argument that you want to go all in while you can with those two, I’d totally get that.
Other honorable mentions would be Matthew Stafford and Justin Herbert. Stafford is terrific, but he’s on the final few holes of his career, and until Herbert starts to uncork piss missiles again on a consistent basis rather than be nerfed by his own team, he’s not truly in Allen’s league.
So at most, four teams would retain their quarterback over Allen. And if money weren’t an issue, that number would be two at most, and if I had to guess, most people would take Allen over Burrow.
You can have your Lamar Jacksons and Tua Tagovailoas of the world who do great in the regular season and disappear when the lights are the brightest. You can have your Brock Purdys or whomever else is Kyle Shanahan’s flavor of the week. Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Kyler Murray - all of their teams would drive them to the airport themselves if it meant getting Allen in return. Like it, lump it - it doesn’t matter. Josh Allen is better than your guy, and you know it.
