True freshman quarterbacks typically have to take their time easing into college football.
That doesn't sound like it's been the case for DJ Lagway.
The Florida Gators true freshman made an immediate impression of fans during the team's spring game. He threw for a pair of touchdowns to go along with multiple throws of 20-plus yards, while also flashing his scrambling ability.
Head coach Billy Napier was asked about the quarterback situation in Florida during SEC Media Days, and he made sure to talk about how impressed he's been with Lagway.
“It’s been an awesome spring with DJ,” Napier told reporters according to On3. “I think it’s unique...It’s been fun. DJ has made great progress...DJ has got a chance to make our team better, and we can never forget he’s one play away from running out there. Critical coming days for DJ in his development and getting ready to do his job for our team.”
None of this should be a huge surprise for Gators fans. Lagway was a 5-star recruit and the No. 1 quarterback in the country for the 2024 recruiting class. His offers included virtually every top-tier program, but the Texas high school QB decided to play for the Gators.
However, don't expect Lagway to be thrown into the starting lineup unless something happens to Graham Mertz. the 23-year-old senior. He transferred to Florida in 2023 after a few seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, throwing for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions in his first year with the Gators.
Mertz should hold down the starting job, allowing Lagway to continue developing and waiting for his chance to be the full-time starter in 2024.
