It's been more than a decade since the Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Longhorns faced each other in the in-state rivalry.
That isn't stopping Conner Weigman from stoking the fire.
Now that Texas is back in the SEC, the Longhorns and Aggies will face each other for the first time this season since 2011. Weigman, the Texas A&M quarterback, was asked about the revival of the rivalry during his opening press conference at fall camp. He didn't waste any time calling his shot.
“I mean I’ve always wanted to beat Texas,” Weigman told reporters. “That’s a given. I don’t know if it was more after that, but yeah that’s a given, that’s gonna happen.”
Weigman calling his shot might be tempting the football gods. But it's good to see that the Aggies quarterback understands what's at stake with the revival of this old rivalry.
The 2024 college football season will be a pivotal one for the Aggies, but also for Weigman. He's played limited reps over the last two seasons, but shined when on the field. On 251 pass attempts, he's completed 155 of them for 1,875 yards, 16 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. He has a prototypical frame for a QB at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, along with a live arm that will intrigue NFL scouts if he decides to go pro after this season.
Texas leads the rivalry series with a 76-37-5 record, and have been particularly dominant as of late. The Longhorns are 9-3 over the last 12 games between the two teams, but Weigman is hoping to turn those things around in 2024.
