There's a new favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck has spent most of the college football offseason as the Heisman favorite. However, that's recently changed on some sportsbooks. Bet365 now has Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel as the odds-on favorite to win the award, with Beck sitting right behind him.
While other sportsbooks still have Beck as the Heisman favorite, it actually makes sense that the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft is starting to lose some steam for the award.
The main reason Beck might not win the Heisman is statistical production. Former LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels is the reigning Heisman winner after racking up 50 total touchdowns in a single season.
Beck displayed impressive efficiency in his first year as a starter, completing 72.4 percent of his passes for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. However, efficiency hasn't compared to total production when it comes to Heisman selections in recent years.
The Bulldogs simply have too many weapons, along with a balanced offense, for Beck to produce the kinds of numbers that other quarterbacks might produce. On the other hand, Gabriel comes into a high-flying offense with Oregon that consistently plays in shootouts, leading to video game numbers from Ducks quarterbacks.
For Beck, his team is so dominant that he will likely end multiple games on the sideline watching his backup get some reps in blowout wins.
The Bulldogs haven't had a Heisman Trophy winner in over 40 years, with Herschel Walker last winning the award back in 1982.
Unless Kirby Smart decides to let Beck air it out all season, it's going to be an uphill battle for him to win the Heisman in 2024.
