It has been a wild ride for the Washington State football program. The Pac-12 team is an "affiliate member" of the West Coast Conference, but the Cougars and Oregon State Beavers don't officially have a football home. They will be following a Mountain West schedule until they can figure out a more permanent relationship with a conference.
Here's what we do know: Last year was a tough ride. The Cougars went 5-7 in what ultimately wound up being the program's worst season since the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. The offseason added insult to injury, with multiple key players, including star QB Cam Ward, leaving the team via the transfer portal.
However, this year's squad possesses a strong receiving corps, an experienced offensive line and a good coaching staff led by head coach Jake Dickert. If redshirt sophomore John Mateer can develop into the Cougars' next star signal-caller, this program could be in for a bounce-back season.
