Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt each eye a victory over a Power Four opponent in their season-opening clash Saturday afternoon.

The Hokies enter their third season under coach Brent Pry with plenty of momentum on the heels of a 7-6 season punctuated by a victory in the Military Bowl. Junior quarterback Kyron Drones, a Baylor transfer, enjoyed a strong first season in Blacksburg with 22 total touchdowns.

Much like Drones, leading rusher Bhayshul Tuten emerged as the 2023 season progressed, setting the stage for what should be a strong 2024. Tuten rushed for 253 yards and three touchdowns across the Hokies' final two games.

Meanwhile, the Commodores are hoping 2024 looks a lot less like 2023. Clark Lea's squad went 2-10 last year, a step backwards following a promising 5-7 campaign in 2022.

All three of Vanderbilt's quarterbacks departed in the offseason, so the Commodores dipped into the transfer portal to bring in Nate Johnson (Utah) and Diego Pavia (New Mexico State) to vie for the job. Thus far, the competition is ongoing, with Vanderbilt's official depth chart not listing a starting quarterback.
