Intrastate rivals face off when Old Dominion hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday.
The Hokies entered the season as a trendy dark horse candidate to win the ACC, but they suffered an overtime loss to Vanderbilt in Week 1. Virginia Tech bounced back in Week 2, rolling past Marshall, 31-14, behind senior running back Bhayshul Tuten, who ran for 120 yards.
Alongside Tuten, junior quarterback Kyron Drones will look to jumpstart the Hokies' offense. Drones impressed at the end of the 2023 season and will look to rekindle that form in Week 3.
The Monarchs are in search of their first win of the 2024 season, though both of their defeats were hard-fought. Old Dominion gave South Carolina a scare in the opener, at one point holding a lead in the fourth quarter, and likewise threatened to beat East Carolina in Week 2.
Defense has proven to be the Monarchs' calling card early in the season. Just last week, Old Dominion recorded four interceptions. On the flipside, the Monarchs will look for more from quarterback Grant Wilson to pull off an upset.
The two programs have played five times in the past seven seasons, with Virginia Tech boasting the all-time edge, 3-2.
