Stanford running back and Heisman contender Christian McCaffrey will not play Saturday night against Notre Dame, Stanford coach David Shaw said.
McCaffrey was injured in the second half of the Cardinal’s loss to Washington State last week. The nature of the injury is still undisclosed but obviously serious enough to keep him off of arguably Stanford’s biggest stage of the season.

McCaffrey is averaging 188.2 all-purpose yards per game this season — good enough for third in the nation entering the day. However, that’s still a significant drop-off from last year’s average of 276 yards. He has not scored a touchdown since Week 2 and has just three through five games.
