Two 6-6 teams featuring vastly different play styles square off when Eastern Michigan faces South Alabama at the 68 Ventures Bowl on Saturday.
The Eagles won their final two games to reach their sixth bowl game in the past eight seasons. It’s a remarkable run for the program, which had only appeared in two bowl games prior to 2016.
Eastern Michigan’s offense averages just 273.6 yards per game, the third-lowest figure in the FBS. Junior quarterback Austin Smith is in his first year as the Eagles’ full-time starter.
South Alabama, meanwhile, averages 424.9 total yards per game, good for 38th-most in the FBS. But their personnel will look drastically different.
Star receiver Caullin Lacy — a first-team All-Sun Belt selection who set a program record with 91 receptions this season — entered the transfer portal and recently committed to Louisville. Running back La’Damian Webb, the team’s leading rusher, will miss the contest with a toe injury. And on top of that, the status of quarterback Carter Bradley (knee) remains unknown.
This will mark the first ever meeting between the two programs.
