One of the great weekends of the college football season takes place around the Thanksgiving holiday — “Rivalry Weekend” — and often determines the outcome of the regular-season conference championships.
It’s also awesome to just sit down and let the glowing, red-hot hatred between two schools wash over you for a few days.
Those rivalries and how they pertain to the Big 12 will look a lot different in 2024, but what’s left seems to be geared toward a pretty special weekend in the future.
In 2024, “Rivalry Weekend” will feature the Territorial Cup featuring Arizona and Arizona State and Farmaggedon between Iowa State and Kansas State — a game that will be played as the season opener in Dublin, Ireland, in 2025.
The Holy War game between Utah and BYU is scheduled for Nov. 9. While games featuring the three Texas schools — Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU — have been natural rivalries in the past, pitting any of those teams against each other would be beneficial.
“Keeping the Territorial Cup (Arizona-Arizona State) and returning The Holy War (Utah-BYU) to rivalry weekend is essential,” wrote The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman. “Farmageddon (Iowa State-Kansas State) has become one of the league’s best rivalries, and the universities have played annually since 1917. They are scheduled to cycle off their schedules in 2027, which would be a shame.”
