More than two years after the NCAA began investigating the Nevin Shapiro-Miami case, the governing body has dealt the Hurricanes their penalties.
Miami will lose three scholarships each of the next three seasons—nine total—and will not have a bowl ban, according to WQAM’s Joe Rose in Miami.

If those penalties hold true, that will be good news for the Hurricanes. When Shapiro first began revealing information originally in a Yahoo Sports report, the allegations painted a grim picture for the program.
But the Hurricanes were pro-active, self-imposing a postseason ban the past two seasons, which included two bowl games and a spot in last season’s ACC Championship game.
Also, Miami basketball coach Frank Haith will be suspended five games, ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman reported.

The official report will be released at 10 a.m. today.
The investigation looked into Shapiro, the former UM booster and a convicted felon, and his relationship with both the Miami football and basketball teams.
Shapiro said that he spent millions on recruits, athletes and coaches from 2002 to 2010. According to The Associated Press, the NCAA found about $173,330 in extra benefits with more than half of that going to former players Vince Wilfork and Antrel Rolle.
Shapiro made the allegations months after federal authorities charged him in April 2010 with bilking investors of at least $900 million in a Ponzi scheme. He is serving a 20-year sentence in federal prison in North Carolina.
Miami was hoping to find out its NCAA punishment before fall practice begin. When that didn’t happen, the hope was that it would know before the season started. But that didn’t happen, either.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are off to a 6-0 start, which includes a win against in-state rival Florida, and are ranked No. 7 in the country.
