'Lot of pride involved': Ex-OSU football star strongly defends Ryan Day from backlash after key rivalry losses image

Former Ohio State star CB Denzel Burke shared an inside scoop on how things went from bad to utterly worse for Ryan Day following the embarrassing 13-10 Michigan loss.

So much so that even the Buckeyes' players were unforgivingly blunt towards their head coach.

"Everyone started lashing out, opinions left and right," Burke said per The Columbus Dispatch

"Dudes calling out coach Day, like some stuff I ain’t never seen before. There was obviously a lot of friction in the whole room. There’s a lot of pride involved."

Somewhere, Burke felt that the loss stemmed from a yet-to-be-addressed problem. The heated locker room discussion led to the Buckeyes finding that problem -- overly complicated game plans that the program was not efficient in -- and simplifying it before a rematch against Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

"I thought that was the best thing that happened to us," the CB said about everyone letting off their steam post-Michigan loss.

Fast forward, Ohio State trounced the Ducks in a 41-21 Rose Bowl rematch.

"That was a real matchup game for us," he said. "We knew whoever won that game was going to win the natty."

Following Oregon, the Buckeyes took down two of the top college football teams Texas and Notre Dame as his redemption, thanks to their fixed game plan.

The Buckeyes and Day can now cross their fingers to settle the books with Michigan in 2025 with their fixed game plan when they take them on in Ann Arbor on Nov. 29.
