West Virginia opened its 2022 season by reigniting its rivalry with Pitt. Now, the Mountaineers are taking on a rival they haven't faced in more than three decades.
Neal Brown's team will travel up to State College to face Penn State, 31 years after the programs last did battle. Much has changed since 1992, but expectations for the rivalry have not.
Penn State has won 34 of its last 36 matchups with West Virginia, and the Nittany Lions enter this year's game as heavy favorites. While Penn State has hopes to win the Big Ten, West Virginia was ranked 14th out of 14 teams in the Big 12 preseason media poll.
All eyes will be on Penn State QB Drew Allar, who takes over for Sean Clifford with high expectations. Allar will have standout RB Nick Singleton to lean on, but much of the Nittany Lions' hopes will fall on the Ohio native's shoulders.
For the Mountaineers, a strong showing in a tough environment might be a way to gather some momentum ahead of the Big 12 schedule, even if that comes in a loss.
