It’s been a long time since the Kansas Jayhawks had a team that created any kind of preseason buzz in the world of college football, but the time might be now for the traditionally downtrodden Big 12 Conference program.
Kansas was one of five teams from the Big 12 ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll preseason Top 25 rankings on Aug. 5, coming in at No. 24. Other Big 12 teams to make the Top 25 were No. 13 Utah, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 21 Arizona.
Other Big 12 teams receiving votes were West Virginia, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Colorado.
Georgia was the No. 1 team in the USA Today Coaches Poll, followed by Ohio State at No.2.
Defending national champion Michigan was No. 8. The two teams that just left the Big 12 for the SEC were both ranked as well, with Texas at No. 4 and Oklahoma at No. 16.
Kansas hasn’t been ranked in a preseason Top 25 poll since they were No. 25 in the AP preseason Top 25 in 2009. The Jayhawks finished the 2023 season ranked No. 23 in the AP Top 25, which was their first postseason ranking since coming in at No. 7 in the final AP Poll in 2007 following their Orange Bowl win over Virginia Tech.
Kansas opens the season at home on Aug. 29 against Lindenwood.
