Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will sit out the first half of Saturday's season opener against Rice, according to multiple reports Wednesday.
The university confirmed the reports later in the afternoon.
Aggies senior associate athletic director Jason Cook told USA Today that the university and NCAA decided on the punishment because of an "inadvertent violation" of NCAA rules on autograph signing.

Cook added that "there is no evidence Manziel received monetary reward in exchange for autographs," according to the NCAA, but that A&M and the NCAA concluded that student-athletes should realize that their autographs will be sold when as many are signed as Manziel reportedly signed.
The news of Manziel's suspension was first reported by Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com and ESPN.com's Bretty McMurphy followed with a report that the suspension closed the book on the NCAA investigation.
The NCAA has been investigating Manziel and whether he accepted money to sign his name more than 4,400 times for memorabilia dealers over six sessions in December and January.
The Heisman-winning quarterback met with NCAA investigators Sunday for nearly six hours and reportedly told them that he did not accept payment for his signatures.
Manziel's family, in a statement released late Wednesday (per AggieSports.com), thanked its attorneys and A&M for their efforts in the matter. The family said it "stands united with Texas A&M."
