Ryan Williams is one of the best WRs in college football as of now. But for many, the true freshman is the best WR in college football. Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith is one of them, but there's a caveat to his statement.
Smith believes that Williams is the best WR in college football, but there is someone who is tied for the title: Smith, himself.
"I just feel like we're the best receivers in the country right now as freshmen," Smith said to CBS Sports this week. Furthermore, Smith also spoke about the encouraging words he had for the Bama WR when exchanging texts.
"I just told him, keep doing what you're doing." Smith knows what it's like to be a breakout star in his first six games, grabbing everyone's attention. Smith did it once before at Ohio State. While he might be all about supporting his fellow WR from Tuscaloosa, he's still competing to be the best in the game.
Jeremiah Smith is following in the footsteps of his idol
The Buckeyes WR tallied 23 catches, 453 yards, and six touchdowns in just 5 games. These Hall of Fame level stats in his freshman year are because of Smith's Hall of Fame inspiration, Cris Carter.
The Buckeyes WR coach Brian Hartline says, per CBS Sports, "He knows he's physically gifted, but he wants to be the best to ever do it and he wants to know the art of playing receiver, and so we spend a lot of time on that."
If Smith continues down that path, he can possibly break Carter's record. But he will have to be fast as Williams is hot on the trail.
