Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze did not hide his disappointment after a 31-13 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Tigers were outclassed by their longtime rivals and fell to a 2-4 record, continuing their rough start to the season.
In his postgame interview, Freeze seemed unsatisfied with his squad’s efforts down the stretch. Although they avoided a major blowout with some solid defense, the Tigers only scored one touchdown through four quarters.
"I expect more fight than what we saw for the 60 minutes today," Freeze said of the team's efforts (h/t 247 Sports). "I told them that in the locker room, and I mean it. It's my job to get that out of them, and I'm gonna die trying."
Hugh Freeze admits the season's disappointing
Auburn will receive a much-needed bye week before returning to action on Oct. 19 against Missouri. After a 41-10 beatdown loss to Texas A&M, the Mizzou Tigers could still be reeling from their shockingly one-sided defeat when they take on Auburn.
Star running back Jarquez Hunter was one of Auburn’s only bright spots, carrying the ball 13 times for 91 yards and a touchdown. Hunter has averaged 88 rushing yards per game this season, and the Tigers may need to lean on him even more going forward.
Freeze made it a point to give Hunter a shoutout and express how proud he was of his team’s run game. Even so, that bright spot could not mask Freeze’s overall frustration with how Auburn’s season has started.
“Obviously a disappointing season,” Freeze said. “And today is another step not in the direction that we had hoped … We're not playing winning football in critical times and moments.”
