Missouri hasn't gotten to its gauntlet of an SEC schedule yet, but the Tigers have already made SEC history.

Eli Drinkwitz's team knocked off No. 15 Kansas State on a 61-yard game-winning field goal by Harrison Mevis on Saturday, the longest field goal in SEC history.

It was a chaotic sequence of events, with what would have been a 56-yard attempt becoming 61 yards when Missouri took a delay of game penalty. Despite the kick being unprecedented in conference history, Mevis drilled it and lifted the Tigers to a 3-0 start.

There was even more chaos post-kick, as officials initially thought a flag came out on the play while fans started rushing the field anyway. Officials quickly determined that the game was over, letting the party officially begin in Columbia.

Here's what you need to know about Mevis, a new SEC record-holder.

Who is Harrison Mevis?

Mevis already dons the nickname, "Thicker Kicker," thanks to his sizable 245-pound build. Regardless of his size, he's proven he can do the job well. Mevis had an outstanding game against Georgia last season, drilling five field goals including two from beyond 50 yards.

Inconsistency has plagued Mevis, however, as he missed a 26-yard attempt to win a game against Auburn in 2022 and was just 1-for-3 through two games this season entering Saturday. Mevis also missed a 53-yard try earlier in the win over Kansas State, though he drilled two other field goal attempts.

It didn't matter when the moment arrived at the end of regulation. Even after getting pushed back, Mevis' kick was on the mark, and Missouri was able to walk away with a win over a former Big 12 rival.

Mevis is a senior at Missouri, with a career mark of 82.5 percent on field goal attempts in his college career. He was excellent in 2021, drilling 23 of 25 attempts before making 22 of 28 tries in 2022. Now, Mevis has an SEC record that stood for more than four decades.

Fuad Reveiz 60 Tennessee 1982
Kevin Butler 60 Georgia 1984
Chris Perkins 60 Florida 1984

No SEC kicker had made a field goal from at least 60 yards out since 1984 before Mevis' game-winner on Saturday. Both Reveiz and Butler went on to carve out long NFL careers after their college days were done.
