Greg McElroy reveals which new SEC coordinator was a 'terrific hire' image

ESPN's Greg McElroy, a former quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, thinks his alma mater is in good shape defensively heading into the 2024 college football season.

On a recent episode of the Always College Football podcast, McElroy labeled Alabama's hiring of defensive coordinator Kane Wommack as a 'terrific hire' by new head coach Kalen DeBoer.

"I thought this was a terrific hire for Kalen DeBoer," McElroy said. "If you look at what Kane Wommack did - he was the head coach of South Alabama and prior to his arrival they had a allowed about 37 points per game, that's what the Jags had given up. They improved to only 25 points per game in Kane Wommack's first season, and then 24 points per game in the next season."

Wommack has been all around the country for the last 14 years, holding nine different jobs at seven different schools. Most recently, Wommack was the head coach at South Alabama. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator where he overlapped with DeBoer, who was the offensive coordinator at the time.
