The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets made headlines with an improbable Week 7 win over North Carolina, and they couldn’t have done it without their star running back Jamal Haynes.
Haynes played hero when he ran 68 yards for a viral game-winning touchdown with less than 30 seconds to go. The sophomore running back ended the 41-34 victory with 19 carries for a career-high 170 yards and two scores.
After the game, Haynes recounted his epic moment and how it unfolded.
“The coaches kept telling me on the sideline, bust one, bust one,” Haynes said, per Kelly Quinlan of JacketsOnline. “They told me to calm down and one is going to come and I got the ball and I was really thinking an explosive play and my left guard and left tackle pulled and one kicked and one wrapped and I saw daylight and just hit it.”
Georgia Tech is off to its best start in 10 years
The Jackets now hold a 5-2 record for the first time since 2014. Haynes has found the end zone in six of seven contests, totaling eight touchdowns on the season.
Tech will host Notre Dame, the No. 11 team in the country, in an exciting Week 8 matchup. Haynes will look to continue his momentum with a third straight game of over 100 rushing yards. Over his last two contests, he has carried the football 38 times for 298 yards.
Despite dealing with multiple injuries, Tech is tied for the second-most wins in the ACC. The Jackets have also won two games in a row for the second time this season.
