Georgia quarterback D'Wan Mathis had surgery Thursday to remove a cyst from his brain, his father told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Terence Mathis said his son had been experiencing severe sinus pain, which played a role in development of the cyst. D'Wan, a freshman who enrolled in January after finishing his high school career last fall, spent Thursday night in the intensive care unit and is expected to need a follow-up procedure,
“I want everyone to know my son is OK and will be back better than ever because of coach (Kirby) Smart and the University of Georgia medical staff and coaching staff,” Terence Mathis told the AJC.
Mathis attended Oak Park High School in suburban Detroit and had previously committed to Iowa State, Michigan State and finally Ohio State before signing with Georgia in December. The primary reason behind his decision to flip to Georgia was former Bulldogs quarterback Justin Fields' decision to transfer to Ohio State.
Mathis was rated the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in his class by 247 Sports and was part of a 2019 Georgia signing class that 247 ranked second in the nation behind Alabama's. He jumped right in during spring practice and completed 15 of 28 passes for 113 yards in the Bulldogs' annual G-Day game last month, and also caught a touchdown pass on a trick play.

He and Stetson Bennett IV have been poised to enter fall camp in a battle to back up starter Jake Fromm.
“D’Wan’s got a nice release, he throws the ball well,” Smart told reporters after the spring game, via the AJC. “He’s picking up the offense. He brings another element, because he has really good legs and really good feet. We might mix him in there at wideout some.”
