Few figures in the media have seen their profile rise like former NFL and West Virginia punter/kickoff specialist Pat McAfee, who has rocketed to the forefront over the past year thanks to ESPN putting “The Pat McAfee Show” in one of its prime morning time slots since May 2023.
One of the conduits to McAfee’s rise to prominence has been his appearances on ESPN’s uber-popular, long-running “College Gameday” show the last two years as a full-time analyst and his guest appearances on the show in previous years.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand on June 18, McAfee might not be back on “College Gameday” in 2024 because he hasn’t signed a new contract — “The Pat McAfee Show” runs on ESPN through a separate contract unrelated to its college football coverage.
“McAfee, the 37-year-old talk show host, wrestling analyst and firebrand, said late last year that he would return to the program, but a deal to make that official is still not completed,” Marchand wrote.
McAfee earned All-American honors as a senior at West Virginia in 2008, when he averaged 44.7 yards per punt.
He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft and played eight seasons in the NFL, earning PFWAA All-Rookie honors in 2009 and made the NFL All-Pro Team in 2014. He was also a two-time Pro Bowler.
