There aren’t many athletes like West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene playing college football … there actually aren’t many quarterbacks like Greene even playing in the NFL.
Greene’s otherworldly athleticism and talent landed him on college football reporter Bruce Feldman’s annual “College Football Freaks List” at No. 86 — one of two Mountaineers to make the list alongside outside linebacker Ty French at No. 94.
There were 11 players from the Big 12 Conference who made the list, with Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter topping that group at the No. 2 spot.
Greene, 5-foot-11 and 204 pounds, has previously said he models his game after former Hesiman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Johnny Manziel — he even wears Mayfield’s same jersey No. 6. Greene plays like a combination of the duo as well, throwing for 2,406 yards, 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions to go with 772 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.
Greene tested out at an elite level in the offseason, including a 10-yard split of 1.48 seconds that’s faster than any quarterback has ever run at the NFL Combine.
From The Athletic: “The former star baseball catcher from Florida took over the starting quarterback job and sparked the Mountaineers to a nine-win season in 2023. Greene proved to be one of the best-kept secrets in college football as a dual-threat quarterback at a program that has had some spectacular ones during the past three decades.”
West Virginia opens the season at home against No. 9 Penn State on Aug. 31.
