One of the great things about our technologically advanced age is we can use something like the uber-popular EA Sports College Football 25 video game for real-life applications … like trying to predict the first 12-team College Football Playoff.
The Athletic’s Max Olson came up with a genius idea to run 25 simulations of Dynasty Mode in the video game of the entire 2024 season — not actually playing the game — and record the results to see who the favorites are to make the CFP. Interestingly enough, Olson’s simulation and accumulated date resulted in two Big 12 Conference teams making the field almost as much as anyone else in the nation — Utah made 10 appearances and Kansas State made nine appearances. Texas Tech and Iowa State made it twice.
From The Athletic: “The 12 teams that most frequently earned playoff appearances: Michigan (23), Oregon (22), Georgia (17), Ohio State (17), Texas A&M (13), Alabama (12), Utah (11), Miami (10), Clemson (nine), Kansas State (nine), Notre Dame (nine) and Penn State (nine). In the end, there were 46 teams that made multiple CFP appearances in the game.”
Colorado didn’t make the CFP in any of the 25 simulations despite having the highest-ranked quarterback and wide receiver in the game with Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.
