Carson Beck left the Georgia football program in January. His decision was not a popular one with Bulldog fans who felt Beck’s girlfriend, Miami women’s basketball star Hanna Cavinder, was negatively affecting the team.
Beck quickly found a new home at The U, furthering the idea that Cavinder had something to do with his exit.
Cavinder denied she had anything to do with Beck choosing Miami during a Tuesday appearance on SportsCenter.
“Obviously, the University of Miami is an amazing campus, and I think it was the best decision for him,” Cavinder said. “I think he’s gonna love the university. Obviously, I love Miami, so I will stay here. My family’s in Fort Lauderdale, but yeah, I’m super excited for him and to be able to watch him play.
“Honestly, I was not involved at all. I know that a lot of people probably think that. But no, I was not involved at all. It was honestly what was the best decision for him and where he was gonna fit and be able to be successful. I’m super excited for him. It’s very convenient. Obviously, you can’t beat Miami and the people here.”
She may not have had anything to do with Beck choosing the Hurricanes, but Cavinder’s relationship with the ex-Georgia QB1 may have had something to do with his exit from Athens.
Per CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, their relationship was a “distraction and source of frustration” last season.
“The nature in which Beck’s departure played out contributes to further sourness in the breakup. Sources say Georgia, at large, had already been miffed with Beck being away from the team during much of College Football Playoff preparation for the Sugar Bowl as Beck sought opinions from doctors in California and Texas,” Marcello wrote.
“Beck was on the sideline for the Sugar Bowl, where the Bulldogs’ season ended in a 23-10 loss to Notre Dame. Beck arrived in New Orleans a day later than his teammates and skipped the team’s media day. Some within the program that week seemed ready to move on from Beck, whose personality and headline-grabbing relationship with Miami basketball star and TikTok sensation Hanna Cavinder had become a distraction and a source of frustration for some teammates, sources said, though many of his teammates remained supportive of him as he dealt with a season-ending surgery.”
No one person or even reason could sway a decision as big as Beck’s. But signs point to Cavinder and Beck being a negative presence in UGA’s locker room.
We’ll see if that changes down in Coral Gables this season.
