The transfer portal has changed the way college football is played over the last few years — just look at the national champions in recent history and their rosters dotted with players who began their careers at other schools.
That won’t change in 2024 for most of college football, even if experts have the Big 12 Conference lagging behind when it comes to landing elite transfer portal recruits.
247Sports put out its list of the Top 50 transfer portal players in 2024 and not a single player with a Big 12 program made the list — even if several players that left Big 12 teams made it.
Ohio State safety Caleb Downs was the No. 1 player on the list after coming to the Buckeyes from Alabama. Downs was arguably the best safety in the nation as a true freshman in 2023, when he was named SEC Freshman of the Year and All-SEC.
Offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor was No. 2 after playing at Alabama in 2023, transferring to Iowa in the offseason … then transferring back to Alabama.
Ole Miss has the No. 1 transfer class, led by former Texas A&M defensive tackle Walter Nolen.
