UVA Football has been on the wrong side of .500 for the past few years, and people think it’s due to their academic standards and lack of money to entice prospects to come. However, one of those things might have been fixed.
According to a statement on the UVA Football website, the program just received a multi-million dollar donation anonymously, the biggest one-time cash contribution and biggest non-capital gift to Virginia Football in program history.
The donor also left a message: “A football team is the flagship brand of a public university; it is the part of the school most frequently seen by the largest number of people. Sustained winning in football energizes the student body and activates our alumni. It attracts our country’s best and brightest to matriculate at school. I am bullish on the future success of this program and optimistic that this commitment will be a catalyst for increased support.”
With the loss of multiple players to the transfer portal after a 5-7 season, including their star QB in Anthony Colandrea, this could not come at a better time.
UVA’s Deputy Athletic Director Kevin Miller also was overjoyed at the news, and said it came at a critical time. ““An investment in football is an investment in all sports and student-athletes at UVA. The timing of this gift is critical as we provide Coach Elliott with the necessary resources to elevate his program. I am immensely grateful for the donor’s amazing generosity and enthusiasm for Virginia Football.”
Hopefully, UVA puts this money to good use over the offseason, and gets some transfers and recruits to get back to competing on the national scale.
