Virginia vs. Purdue results: Cavaliers advance to the Final Four in overtime thriller image

Despite Carsen Edwards’ terrific 42-point effort, Virginia moved on to the Final Four, 80-75, in an overtime thriller. 

Edwards stole the show with his scoring outburst, in which he made 10 3-pointers, while Virginia guards Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome combined for 49 points. 

Kihei Clark and Mamadi Diakite teamed up to keep Virginia alive and send it to overtime. Clark got the rebound on a missed free throw and passed it to Diakite, who beat the buzzer on a jumper.

Guy returned for the second stanza after suffering an ankle injury at the end of the first half and gave the Cavaliers a big boost, breaking out of his tournament-long shooting spell with five 3s.

Meanwhile, Edwards set the record for most points in an NCAA Tournament through the first four games since 2000. He also scored the most 3s of any player in the first four games of the tournament. 

A second half lineup change by Virginia made a big difference in swinging the momentum.in the Cavaliers’ favor. 

Coach Tony Bennett opted to go with Jack Salt over Clark for some more height and the Cavaliers responded with a 12-4 run to open the half, taking control after Purdue dominated most of the first 20 minutes.

Virginia will face either No. 2 Kentucky or No. 5 Auburn in the Final Four.

11:07 p.m.: Virginia advances to the Final Four! 

11:07 p.m.: Virginia gets the inbound in successfully and Clark hits the free throws to put the Cavaliers up five. 

11:04 p.m.: Purdue turns the ball over with 1.8 remaining and Virginia can wrap it up. 

11:02 p.m.: Guy hits them both to put Virginia up three points with 5.7 seconds left.

11:01 p.m.: Edwards misses the 3 and Guy gets the rebound and is fouled. 

10:59 p.m.: Hunter responds with a basket of his own and Virginia is ahead again. 26 seconds left to play. 

10:59 p.m.: Edwards drives through the lane and puts his team back up by a point. 

10:56 p.m.: Eastern hits one free throw and Hunter hits two. Virginia is up one. 

10:53 p.m.: Jerome ties it with a layup.

10:52 p.m.: Purdue strikes first in overtime on a Haarms layup. 

10:47 p.m.: Wow! Virginia saves it on the rebound and Diakite hits the shot at the buzzer. We are headed to overtime! 

10:47 p.m.: Cline hits one free throw and Jerome will head to the line down three with 5.9 seconds left.

10:45 p.m.: Edwards misses a 3 but Grady Eifert gets the offensive rebound and Virginia has to foul. 

10:44 p.m.: Edwards banks in his 10th 3 of the game. He has 40 points! 

10:43 p.m.: Key defensive stop for Purdue and it has the ball down a point with 1:15 left.

10:39 p.m.: Both teams are in the bonus and have taken advantage, with a pair of made free throws apiece. 

10:38 p.m.: Guy responds with a layup to put Virginia back up.

10:34 p.m.: Nojel Eastern gets the offensive rebound and layup to put the Boilermakers back up. 3:36 left to play and we heading towards a great finish. 

10:32 p.m.: Nine made 3s for Edwards! He's keeping his team in this one with under five minutes to play.

10:30 p.m.: Williams delivers the layup but Jerome hits a 3. 61-57 Virginia. 

10:24 p.m.: Guy and Edwards exchange 3s again. This is a shooting clinic!

10:18 p.m.: Trevion Williams and Edwards with back-to-back baskets to cut it to a one-possession game. 

10:13 p.m.: Edwards has set the record for most 3s through the first four tournament games. He has 25. Virginia still leads by seven points at the under 12-minute timeout. 

10:12 p.m.: Edwards responds with another 3 to cut into the lead. He has 22 points and six 3s.

10:12 p.m.: Ty Jerome and Edwards exchange 3s and Virginia remains in the lead by eight points.

10:06 p.m.: Virginia leads by seven at the first media timeout. Guy has 13 points, including nine in the second half.

10:01 p.m.: Guy hits another 3 and Virginia now leads by five!

9:59 p.m.: Kyle Guy seems to be alright. He hits a 3 out of the half and Virginia has the lead.

9:36 p.m.: Purdue leads 30-29 at halftime. A lot of offense in the first 10 minutes, but that flattened out in the latter part of the half.

9:34 p.m.: Kihei Clark has the goods.

9:28 p.m.: May be some bad news for Virginia. Kyle Guy appears to be shaken up and is limping. He will be attended to on the bench.

9:23 p.m.: Virginia continues to score but Edwards keeps responding. He's on fire with 16 points.

9:21 p.m.: The Cavaliers' defense is putting the clamps down and they have started scoring on the other end. It's now a four-point Purdue lead.

9:15 p.m.: 25-16 Boilermakers at the under 8-minute timeout. Edwards has 11 points. 

9:12 p.m.: Mamadi Diakite is off to a fast start for the Cavaliers. He has eight points on 4-for-4 shooting. 

9:10 p.m.: Five more points for Purdue and it leads by 10. The Boilermakers are in total control. 

9:04 p.m.: Ryan Cline and Eric Hunter Jr. add to Purdue's parade of 3s and it leads 17-12.

8:54 p.m.: The Boilermakers lead 11-8 at the first media timeout. Edwards has six points.

8:52 p.m.: Nobody can miss! The teams are a combined 6 of 6 and Purdue leads 8-6.

8:50 p.m.: Ryan Cline picks up right where he left off and hits a 3 for the first points of the game.
