Top-ranked UConn will look to extend its winning streak to eight games when the Huskies host Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 28.

UConn will honor the 2003-04 national championship team with its induction to the Huskies of Honor at halftime.

UConn edged Villanova, 66-65, and took sole possession of first place in the Big East on Saturday. Tristen Newton had 25 points, and Cam Spencer scored 14 points for the Huskies, who are 2-0 since they were voted No. 1 the AP Top 25 in the regular season for the first time since they spent four weeks there in the second half of the 2008-09 season.

The Huskies finished with 13 assists on 20 made field goals.

UConn is the reigning national champion and is trying to become the first program to win back-to-back titles since Florida in 2006-07. The Huskies don’t play against a ranked team until Feb. 17 against No. 17 Marquette.

The Huskies are looking to win their 11th regular-season Big East championship.

The Musketeers lost to No. 17 Creighton, 85-78, on Tuesday night, which snapped a season-high three-game winning streak.

Dayvion McKnight and Desmond Claude each scored 20, and Quincy Olivari finished with 15 and had a team-high seven rebounds for Xavier, which fell to 4-4 in the Big East.

The Musketeers have lost six consecutive games against ranked opponents since beating then-No. 24 Creighton 82-60 in the Big East Tournament last season.

UConn beat Xavier 80-75 on Jan 10.
