Texas and Houston are set to meet for just the second time ever — and the first as members of the Big 12 — when the Cougars head to Austin for an intrastate showdown Monday night.

Houston (18-2) enters the matchup on a four-game winning streak, rounding into form after a rocky opening to conference play. After a 74-52 annihilation of Kansas State on Saturday, the Cougars sit in second place in the Big 12, just a half game back of Texas Tech.

Against the Wildcats, Houston unfurled its best version of itself. The Cougars allowed just 52 points — on par with their 51.9 average, the best in the nation — and outscored K-State by 22, once again on par with their nation-leading point differential; they are outscoring opponents by an average of 22 points per game. Senior guard Jamal Shead dropped a game-high 17 points, the sixth consecutive game he has scored in double figures.

Texas (14-6), meanwhile, sits at 3-4 in Big 12 play and eighth place in the conference. The Longhorns saw a two-game winning streak (one that included wins over top-25 teams in Baylor and Oklahoma) end at the hands of BYU on Saturday.

In the 84-72 loss, Texas allowed BYU to shoot 62% from the field, a byproduct of porous defense. In a bright spot, senior forward Dylan Disu continues to produce. Fully healed from an early-season foot injury, Disu has now scored 19 points in three straight games.

It’s the first of two meetings between the teams this season, with Texas slated to come to Houston on Feb. 17. The only prior meeting in series history occurred in the first round of the CBI in 2013, a thrilling 73-72 win for the Cougars.
