Davidson College won't bend its rules on retiring former players' jerseys, not even for the NBA's reigning MVP.

Stephen Curry, the hottest player in the NBA today, is a lock to have his jersey retired at his former school . . . once he gets his degree. Until then, the school said it won't retire his jersey.

Curry left in 2009 during his junior year after helping the Wildcats reach the Elite Eight a year earlier. He left Davidson as the school's all-time scoring leader and led the NCAA in scoring the 2009 season.

Curry told ESPN he plans on receiving his sociology degree soon to fulfill a promise he made to longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop.

"I knew what I signed up for when I went to Davidson," Curry said Wednesday after leading the Warriors to a win at Charlotte that pushed the Warriors record to 20-0.

"It's still a priority, for sure; obviously there's a lot going on right now," Curry added about getting his degree. "Taking advantage of my career right now on the court in the NBA, it's only a very short window, so you want to give all the attention and effort. But to be able to finish out that part of my life, whenever it does happen, will be huge."

McKillop said Curry, who grew up in Charlotte and stayed close to attend nearby Davidson, helped raise the profile of Wildcats basketball during its run through the 2008 NCAA Tournament. McKillop called Curry "the biggest catalyst for Davidson basketball that Davidson College has ever had." Curry's influence has grown even stronger after leading the Warriors to an NBA championship last season and claiming league MVP honors.

That said, the school won't make an exception.

"It's one of those things where, I'm not even sure who would make that decision, to be honest with you, just because it's never come up before," athletic director Jim Murphy told ESPN. "I assume it would be the board of trustees.

"There has not been an exemption for it, to my understanding, for anyone. The policy itself speaks a lot to what Davidson is all about. It'd be an interesting discussion, but it hasn't been started yet."

Davidson announced its Hall of Fame class on Thursday. Curry wasn't among the five new inductees, but it's inevitable. Once he graduates.
