The road to redemption for Purdue is at last set to begin.
A year ago, the Boilermakers suffered the most unceremonious of March Madness fates, becoming just the second No. 1 seed to fall to a No. 16 seed.
Now, after winning their second consecutive regular season Big Ten title, Purdue is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Virginia — after falling to No. 16 UMBC in 2018, the Cavaliers returned the following March with a vengeance, winning the national championship.
They will lean heavily on Zach Edey, the 7-foot-4 center and odds-on favorite to win National Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. But Purdue will also need more stellar play from its backcourt. Sophomores Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer, along with high-impact transfer Lance Jones.
Purdue’s path begins against either No. 16 Grambling or No. 16 Montana State, as the two teams will meet in Dayton as a part of the First Four on Wednesday evening, with the winner advancing to play the Boilermakers.
Grambling is making its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the SWAC, while Montana State is in the Big Dance for the third consecutive year. The Bobcats won the Big Sky Tournament despite being the No. 5 seed.
