The road to Hinkle Fieldhouse for the 2024 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship game begins on Sunday evening with the bracket reveal.
Thirty-two teams will qualify for the event, and while it is no NCAA Tournament, the NIT is nonetheless steeped in tradition and lore as it enters its 86th iteration.
This year, the NIT features a new look, too. Not only are there different rules for qualifying, but there are also experimental rules in place, such as a widened free-throw lane (on par with that of the NBA and FIBA) and a revised media timeout format to eliminate the second-half floating timeout.
Before the action begins, though, the bracket must be set. The Sporting News has you covered with everything that you need to know ahead of this year’s NIT bracket reveal.

NIT bracket selection format
In October, the NIT Board of Managers announced a number of changes that will impact which teams qualify for the NIT.
Of greatest impact, conference regular-season champions that do not make the NCAA Tournament will not automatically qualify for the NIT.
Instead, twelve spots are guaranteed for the two highest-rated non-NCAA Tournament teams in the NET rankings from each of the six major conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big 10, Pac-12 and SEC). The committee will then select 20 at-large bids to complete the 32-team field.
The 12 automatic qualifiers will have the opportunity to host a first round game, as well as the four highest-rated teams in the pool of at-large bids.
