It was expected, hinted at and then confirmed.

Montgomery was reportedly leaning toward retirement. He's coached the Cal Bears for six seasons, four of which he led the team to NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bears 2014 season ended in the NIT quarterfinals after a 21-14 season. 

During 18 seasons at Stanford, he appeared in 12 NCAA Tournaments, the 1998 Final Four and the 2001 Elite Eight. 

Montgomery, 67, is a cancer survivor and won 677 games in Division I. He will make the announcement official in a press conference at 5:30 p.m. ET on Pac-12 network and streaming online
