NCAA tournament Field of 68 projections

No. 1 seeds

Kansas (27-7, 13-5 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 6, KenPom: 8. The Jayhawks piled up an NCAA-best 15 victories in Quad 1 in the regular season, and despite the loss to Texas in the Big 12 championship game still have a claim to be the top seed in the tournament.

*Houston (31-2, 17-1 American)

Resume: Net: 1, KenPom: 1. The Cougars have a compelling case for the No. 1 overall seed, and they are 6-1 against Quad 1 opponents. They are a sound bet for the top seed in the West region.

*Alabama (28-5, 16-2 SEC)

Resume: Net: 2, KenPom: 3. The Crimson Tide have 10-5 in Quad 1, and they have no losses in Quads 2-4. Alabama advanced to the SEC championship with a 72-61 victory against Missouri.

*Purdue (28-5, 15-5 Big Ten)

Resume: Net: 5, KenPom: 6. Purdue or UCLA? The Boilermakers have a 10-4 record against Quad 1, and Zach Edey flexed with 32 points and 14 rebounds in a 80-66 victory against Ohio State in the Big Ten semifinal round.

No. 2 seeds

MORE: Purdue's Zach Edey named SN's Player of the Year

+Texas (26-8, 12-6 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 9, KenPom: 9. The Longhorns beat Kansas 76-56 in the Big 12 championship game, which ensures their spot on the No. 2 line and makes them a long-shot to get a No. 1 seed.

MORE: Texas interim Rodney Terry is SN's Coach of the Year

+Arizona (28-6, 14-6 Pac-12)

Resume: Net: 11, KenPom: 10. Arizona has a case for a No. 1 seed, too, after knocking off the Bruins in the Pac-12 championship. The more likely scenario is both Pac-12 powers play on the No. 2 line.

UCLA (29-5, 18-2 Pac-12)

Resume: Net: 3, KenPom: 2. The Bruins' lost 61-59 in the Pac-12 tournament championship to Arizona, which likely will keep them on this line unless Purdue loses.

+Marquette (28-6, 17-3 Big East)

Resume: Net: 12, KenPom: 12. Marquette should stay on this line after beating Xavier 65-51 in the Big East championship.

No. 3 seeds

+Gonzaga (28-5, 14-2 WCC)

Resume: Net: 7, KenPom: 7. Gonzaga leads the nation with 87.5 points per game and will not have the pressure of being a No. 1 seed. That makes the Bulldogs a dangerous team.

Baylor (22-10, 11-7 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 13, KenPom: 16. Baylor is 15-9 against Quads 1-2. The 78-72 loss to Iowa State does not help, however, will lead to them falling to the No. 3 line.

Kansas State (23-9, 11-7 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 24, KenPom: 23. The Wildcats have nine Quad 1 victories and just one loss in Quads 2-4. That likely will keep them on this line despite Thursday's 80-67 loss to TCU.

Xavier (25-9, 15-5 Big East)

Resume: Net: 19, KenPom: 14. The Musketeers moved up a line after beating Creighton 82-60 and advancing to the Big East championship game. Xavier swept UConn in the regular season.

No. 4 seeds

UConn (25-8, 13-7 Big East)

Resume: Net: 8, KenPom: 4. The Huskies are 17-1 outside of Quad 1, and they fall down a line after losing in the Big East semifinals.

Tennessee (23-10, 11-7 SEC)

Resume: Net: 4, KenPom: 5. The Vols are 10-10 in Quads 1-2, but it has been a gradual slide to a No. 4 seed. A 78-71 loss to Missouri in the SEC quarterfinals did not help.

Duke (26-8, 14-6 ACC)

Resume: Net: 17, KenPom: 24. Duke has won nine straight games, and is in position to climb over another line after beating Virginia 59-49 in the ACC championship game. First-year coach Jon Scheyer has the Blue Devils rolling.

Texas A&M (25-8, 15-3 SEC)

Resume: Net: 20, KenPom: 20. The Aggies have pieced together a phenomenal season in conference play, and they advanced to the SEC championship to face Alabama.

No. 5 seeds

Virginia (25-7, 15-5 ACC)

Resume: Net: 29, KenPom: 34. Virginia is 11-5 in Quads 1-2 after a loss to Duke in the ACC championship game. They will flip lines with the Blue Devils as a result.

Indiana (22-11, 12-8 Big Ten)

Resume: Net: 27, KenPom: 27. The Hoosiers split their last six regular-season games, and they lost 77-73 to Penn State in the Big Ten semifinals.

Miami (25-7, 15-5 ACC)

Resume: Net: 35, KenPom: 39. The ACC regular-season champions have an 10-4 record in Quads 1-2, but the loss to Duke prevents the Hurricanes from moving up. Norchad Omier's ankle injury also is a huge concern moving into the NCAA tournament.

TCU (21-12, 9-9 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 29, KenPom: 25. The Horned Frogs have won four of their last six games before losing to Texas 66-60 in the Big 12 semifinals.

No. 6 seeds

Saint Mary's (26-7, 14-2 WCC)

Resume: Net: 10, KenPom: 11. The Gaels lost 77-51 to Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference championship game, which means they fall to the No. 6 line. Saint Mary's was a No. 5 seed last year with an almost-identical resume.

Creighton (21-12, 14-6 Big East)

Resume: Net: 16, KenPom: 13. The Blue Jays lost to Xavier, but their strong ranking combination keeps them on this line.

+San Diego State (27-6, 15-3 MWC)

Resume: Net: 15, KenPom: 15. It remains to be seen how much the committee will respect the Mountain West Conference, but the Aztecs should stay here after winning the MWC.

Iowa State (19-13, 9-9 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 21, KenPom: 22. The Big 12 strength of schedule is a plus, and the Cyclones opened the Big 12 tournament with a 78-72 victory against Baylor on Thursday.

No. 7 seeds

Kentucky (21-11, 12-6 SEC)

Resume: Net: 26, KenPom: 26. The Wildcats slide down this line after a 80-73 loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC quarterfinals.

Missouri (23-9, 11-7 SEC)

Resume: Net: 42, KenPom: 51. The Tigers have the lowest ranking combination of any SEC team in the field, but an appearance in the SEC semifinals should keep them on this line.

Northwestern (21-11, 12-8 Big Ten)

Resume: Net: 41, KenPom: 41. The Wildcats held a 7-5 record in Quad 1, but they had a quick exit from the Big Ten tournament in a 67-65 loss to Penn State.

Michigan State (19-12, 11-8 Big Ten)

Resume: Net: 33, KenPom: 32. The Spartans have maintained a 6-9 record against Quad 1, but a 68-58 loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament is not a good last impression.

No. 8 seeds

+FAU (31-3, 18-2 C-USA)

Resume: Net: 14, KenPom: 29. The Owls beat UAB 78-56 in the Conference-USA tournament, but their ranking will be pulled down by just two Quad 1 victories.

Arkansas (20-13, 8-10 SEC)

Resume: Net: 22, KenPom: 19. The Razorbacks have a 4-10 record against Quad 1 opponents, and their inconsistency keeps them on this line.

Maryland (21-12, 11-9 Big Ten)

Resume: Net: 30, KenPom: 21. The Terps are in, but a late-season fade will keep them in the Big Ten jumble of No. 7 and No. 8 seeds.

Iowa (19-13, 11-9 Big Ten)

Resume: Net: 39, KenPom: 36. Iowa's up-and-down season continued with a 73-69 loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament.

First Four Out

Oklahoma State (18-15, 8-10 Big 12)

Vanderbilt (20-14, 11-7 SEC)
