Sunday was supposed to be the Hailey Van Lith revenge game. LSU was a heavy favorite to beat No. 14 Rice, while Van Lith's former team, No. 6 Louisville, was a favorite over Middle Tennessee State.
The Tigers lived up to their end of the pre-game narratives. The Blue Raiders had different plans.
Middle Tennessee stunned the Cardinals, winning 71-69 behind 46 combined points from Jaylnn Gregory and Savannah Wheeler. The win by MTSU set up a clash between the lowest seeded team to win Friday and the reigning national champions.
LSU will enter the matchup as a significant favorite, but that didn't matter to Rice when the No. 14 Owls played the Tigers on Friday. LSU was a heavy favorite then, too, but the Owls took the Tigers to the wire, leading at one point in the third quarter and keeping a game that had a spread favoring the Tigers nearly by 30 to falling only 70-60 in a narrow clash.
It had been uncharacteristically cold outings from LSU star Angel Reese, who was just 1-of-7 from the field for 10 points, and Van Lith, who was 2-for-7 for seven points. Aneesah Morrow (15), Flau'jae Johnson (14) and Mikaylah Williams (14) carried the offense for the Tigers, as each shot no worse than 50 percent from the field.

The Tigers under coach Kim Mulkey have reached the second round in all three seasons since she arrived in Baton Rouge. Last year was the banner season, as the Tigers won the national championship, topping Iowa, 102-85, as a No. 3 seed.
The year prior, the Tigers again entered as a No. 3 seed and won their opening-round matchup, topping No. 14 Jackson State. However, No. 6 seed Ohio State eliminated LSU to end the Tigers' season.
This is the second straight tournament the Blue Raiders have reached and the 12th time under coach Rick Insell, who has been with the program for 19 seasons.
Only once (2007) has MTSU advanced past the first round under Insell, when the Blue Raiders reached the second round and lost to No. 13 Marist. Middle Tennessee State has never advanced past the second round.
